Way back to the 1970's, the Centre was used as the office of the Sarawak Geological Department. Then in the 1980's, the building was used by Sarawak Economic and Development Corporation as the coordination center for the development of the Bumiputra entrepreneurs.

In the 1990's, the building was handed over to the Ministry of Industrial Development Sarawak (MID). The building was used as Sarawak Industrial and Entrepreneurial Information Centre ( Pusat Maklumat Perindustrian dan Keusahawan Sarawak ) for the overall entrepreneurial development and disseminate information such as industrial policies, incentives, strategies, and programmes regarding the manufacturing industries in Sarawak.

Today, as the core business of the Ministry of Industrial Development encompasses more areas and in order to be more competitive attracting more domestic and foreign investments, there is an increasing role for MID to proactively and aggressively compile, disseminate and promote the various comparative advantage of Sarawak to the potential investors. The well-renovated SIPEC will greatly assist or facilitate in spearheading the overall coordination and promotion of the conducive investment environment of Sarawak to the potential investors.
